Your Kids Don't Need a Perfect Family Devotional. They Just Need You.
Simple family discipleship starts with showing up, opening God's Word, and making room for Jesus in the everyday moments.
Can I tell you something?
You don't need a theology degree to teach your kids about Jesus.
You don't need a perfectly planned family devotional, a color-coded Bible reading schedule, or kids who sit quietly with their hands folded while you read Scripture.
(Although, if you've figured out that last one, please let me know.)
You just need to start.
I think sometimes we make family discipleship feel so much bigger and more complicated than God ever intended it to be.
We want our kids to know and love Jesus. We want to raise them with a strong foundation of faith. We want God's Word to be part of our homes.
But then life happens.
There's homework. Laundry. Dinner. Bedtime. A million places to be and approximately zero quiet moments.
And somewhere in the middle of it all, we wonder, Are we doing enough to teach our kids about Jesus?
Friend, I want to encourage you today.
Family discipleship isn't about doing everything perfectly. It's about faithfully pointing your kids to Jesus, one ordinary moment at a time.
God Never Asked You to Make It Complicated
One of my favorite passages about family discipleship is Deuteronomy 6:6–7.
God tells His people to keep His words on their hearts and teach them diligently to their children. To talk about them when they sit at home, when they walk along the road, when they lie down, and when they get up.
Did you catch that?
At home. On the road. At bedtime. In the morning.
That sounds a whole lot like our everyday lives, doesn't it?
God wasn't describing a perfectly decorated family worship space or a 45-minute Bible lesson every evening.
He was describing a way of life.
Our homes are some of the most important places where our children will learn what it looks like to know, love, and follow Jesus.
Not because we have all the answers, but because we have opportunities every single day to point them to the One who does.
Your Kids Are Watching More Than You Think
Here's something I think we forget.
Our kids aren't just learning about Jesus when we open the Bible.
They're learning when they see us pray about something that's hard.
When we apologize after losing our patience.
When we choose kindness even when someone hasn't been kind to us.
When we worship in the car, thank God around the dinner table, or talk about what Scripture means for our lives.
And yes, they're learning when we mess up, too.
Because our kids don't need perfect parents.
They need parents who are following a perfect Savior.
There's a big difference.
So, What Does Family Discipleship Actually Look Like?
Maybe you're wondering where to even begin.
Here are five simple ways to help your kids grow in faith at home this week.
1. Read a little Scripture together.
You don't have to read an entire chapter. Start with a few verses. Read a Bible story. Talk about what it teaches us about God.
2. Ask one good question.
Try something like, "What does this teach us about Jesus?" or "How could we live this out tomorrow?"
You might be surprised by what your kids have to say.
3. Pray out loud together.
It doesn't have to sound fancy. Thank God for something good. Ask Him for help with something hard. Let your kids hear you talk to Him like He's part of your everyday life. Because He is.
4. Make it fun!
Build something. Sing a worship song. Act out a Bible story. Create something with your hands.
Kids learn through play, and there are so many wonderful ways to help God's Word come alive in your home.
5. Keep showing up.
Some days, your family devotional might turn into a beautiful conversation about Jesus.
Other days, someone will spill their juice, someone else will be upside down on the couch, and you'll wonder if anybody heard a single word.
Keep going.
Faithfulness doesn't always look impressive. Sometimes it just looks like trying again tomorrow.
And to My Friends in Children's and Family Ministry...
Can I encourage you, too?
You have an incredible opportunity to come alongside the families in your church.
Parents don't need another reason to feel like they're falling short. They need encouragement, practical tools, and someone reminding them that they really can lead their children spiritually.
What if we helped parents see that family discipleship isn't another program to squeeze into an already busy schedule?
What if we equipped them to recognize the moments God has already given them?
Because the goal isn't simply to help kids learn about Jesus on Sunday.
It's to help families keep talking about Him on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and every other day of the week.
The church and the home were never meant to compete.
We're on the same team.
Start Small. Start Today.
If there's one thing I hope you take away from this, it's this:
You don't have to do everything. But you can do something.
Open your Bible tonight.
Ask your kids one question.
Pray together before school tomorrow.
Turn on a worship song while you're making dinner.
It doesn't have to be complicated to be meaningful.
And it doesn't have to be perfect for God to use it.
One conversation. One prayer. One ordinary moment at a time.
That's how we begin building homes where Jesus is known, loved, and worshiped.
And friend, that's worth showing up for.
We're Here to Help Make It Simple
This is exactly why Dallas and I started WITH Families.
